Summer Conditioning Programs

Dates: July 21st - August 27th

Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays; 4:00-5:30 pm

Location: Duniway Park

Description: Summer running + strength and conditioning program for youth athletes entering grades 6-12. All abilities welcomed to join the evening running program sponsored by Run Portland to promote proper summer conditioning for runners.

Experienced harriers and new runners alike will benefit from the variety of activities offered in this program. This training program intends to compliment the organized training of existing high school programs by offering circuit training, running form drills and injury prevention routine in the context of an enjoyable running based training program. Ideal for runners entering a fall cross country program or team sport athletes in need of cardiovascular fitness and general strength training. Athletes will be divided into groups based on ability and work with experienced youth coaches certified and insured by USATF.

Head coach:

Charlotte Lettis Richardson
Charlotte has coached XC and Track for over 35 years at the middle school, high school, college and club levels. She was the Co - Head Track and Field coach at Lincoln High School for 4 years retiring in 2007 after Lincoln HS won both the men’s and women’s Oregon State Track and Field Championships. She currently co - coaches the women’s Bowerman AC, as well as individual runners. The last two years she has coached the middle and distance runners at De La Salle HS in NE Portland. Charlotte was a national caliber middle and distance runner in the 1970’s. She ran in the Olympic Trials in 1976 in the 1500. She held many New England and Regional Titles in every event from the 880 to 30K at some time during her career.

Melissa Hill

A Portland based running coach for the last eight years, Melissa has been coaching Nike employees for the last five years.  Melissa has been involved in running since high school when she first saw her triplet brother run the mile.  She joined the high school track team and has been running ever since.  She was the AAU Texas state high jump champion in 1978.  During her collegiate career, she ran cross country, 400m hurdles, and the 4 x 400m.

Coach Hill began establishing running programs when she moved to Portland in 1997. Concerned about the fitness of area youth she has introduced running clubs at three area elementary schools and organized and is head coach of the cross country and track and field teams at East-West Sylvan Middle School, also volunteering as a coach for Lincoln High School cross country and track and field teams

Melissa earned a Level II USATF coaching certification in July 2002, a Level I in January 2001, has completed several Advanced Distance seminars, and holds a B.S. degree inclusive of 20 credits of exercise science.

Sean Coster

Sean Coster has been passionate about running for the last 19 years. As an athlete he enjoyed competing in college at the division I level. As a student his graduate thesis project applied his knowledge of exercise physiology to a software program enabling coaches to manage their athletes. As a coach he has enjoyed the success that beginners to national class athletes have achieved with his well rounded, individualized coaching programs.
Sean is a coach of the Nike Bowerman Athletic Club,  member of the coaching staff at the Nike Sports center in Beaverton OR and founder of Complete Running Programs.  Sean’s coaching methods have been seen in Runners World, Nike Running.com, Competitor Magazine and Race Center Northwest.  Sean has achieved level I coaching certification from USATF and accreditation with the Road Runners Club of America.

Cost: $100.00 for session; scholarships and sliding scale available for athletes who qualify.

Session 2: July 21st - August 27th (Registration accepted through 7/30)


Events: Weekly 3k cross country series presented by the BAC at the Nike Campus
